Mr. and Mrs. Smith approached me about creating a Mexican floral border around a window in their home. The exterior stucco had needed repair; traces of where the work had been done were still visible, and they wanted the mural to help hide it. I created a few digital drafts, and this is the one they landed on. Mr. Smith is an avid gardener, and they share a love for color and Mexican folk art.
This was one of my first murals in this style. Painting on the textured exterior and keeping symmetry proved to be tricky. I ended up changing the design while I was doing it, including some of the flower colors. It is interesting to see how a design on paper doesn’t always translate into the physical world as well as I think it will. I realized to keep balance with their home, I needed to scale the design up; otherwise, I believe the details would have gotten lost or worse, looked crowded and unbalanced.
